Boris Nieslony, born on 2 October 1945, has been occupied with images, with life as action and the wonderful world of thought since the age of 21. After working in various professions, he studied fine arts and philosophy at the Berlin Art Academy and the Hamburg Art Academy from 1970 onwards, graduating as a master student in 1976.
His investigations into language and concepts led him to found various organisations to shape theory as practice and practice as theory. His working method can be described as intermedial.
In addition to artistic forms of presentation (exhibition spaces and projects), he transferred projects such as the “Communicating Tube Archive”, the “Anthropognostic Tableware”, (an encyclopaedic archive sculpture) and the laboratory of perception “Paradise” into many years of aesthetic and philosophical research.
The organisation ASA (Art-Service-Association, since 1984) focused on cooperation, communication and service in the culturally diverse fields of performance art and action art. The focus was on the stringent formation of networks worldwide and also, very early on, on the integration of the Internet in the transfer of communication and information. Starting with the 30-day project “The Council”, he developed an extensive performance archive from the “Black Ark” and was instrumental in initiating the performance association “Black Market International”.
The question: “How does an archive generate knowledge?” led to the collaboration with Gerhard Dirmoser and the diagrammatisation of the context of performance and performing arts. The next step was the establishment of the “Permanent Performance Art Conference”. To date, 17 conferences have taken place worldwide. The foundation of the “E.P.I. Centre” (European Performance Institute, since 2002) sought to synergise theory and practice. “Encounter-mediate-transform” became the cornerstones of the concept of thinking and acting “Open Source Performance”. The realisation of the concept was launched with the platform “Aktions-Labor PAErsche” in 2010.
The spectrum of fields of work includes image and material research, photography, installation, object art, seminars, lectures, communication modules, performance appearances and exhibitions worldwide.
